He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 and fears (Allah), 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and herbage 28 And olives and palms 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and grass, 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
