He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 Exalted, pure. 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and herbage 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 mother, father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
