He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 From him you are distracted. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 Out of what did Allah create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 How We pour water in showers 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 his mother and his father, 35 his consort, his sons, 36 on that Day, to every one of them will his own state be of sufficient concern. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
