He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 To him you give attention. 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 and who has fear of God, 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 exalted, purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 Noble and righteous. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And dense gardens, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 but others will be gloomy 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
