He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away, 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 or yet remember, and the Reminder profit him. 4 Yet you pay attention 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 And whereas he fears, 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 Exalted, pure. 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble, pious. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and green fodder 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 And when the Blast shall sound, 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 laughing and joyful, 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
