He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him. 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 Unto him thou payest regard. 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 And as for him who cometh unto thee running, 8 and who has fear of God, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 in [the light of His] revelations blest with dignity, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Noble and pious. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Every man of them shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Dust shall cover them 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
