He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 Unto him thou payest regard. 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 And whereas he fears, 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what has God created him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and herbage 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 on a Day when everyone will [want to] flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
