He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 when the blind came to him. 2 But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 These verses are a reminder 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 lofty and pure, 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 And his wife and his children, 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
