He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because there came unto him a blind man. 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for he who is sufficed 5 To him you give attention. 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and fearfully, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 May (the disbelieving) human being be condemned! What makes him disbelieve? 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 Then We cause to grow therein the grain, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 Olives and dates, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 his consort, his sons, 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 but others will be gloomy 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
