He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 to him thou attendest 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 From him you are distracted. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 Indeed, he has not fulfilled that which He has ordered him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 then caused the grain to grow out of it, 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 and covered by darkness. 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
