He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 to him thou attendest 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 and in awe of God 9 you ignore him. 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 From Nutfah (male and female semen drops) He created him, and then set him in due proportion; 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 then caused the grain to grow out of it, 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 and fruits and fodder 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
