He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 because the blind man approached him! 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 to him thou attendest 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 And grapes and herbage 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 with darkness overspread: 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
