He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 And he feareth 9 You neglect. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 Thereafter We cleave the earth in clefts, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 on a Day when everyone will [want to] flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And many a face will be covered with dust on that day. 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
True are the words of God the Almighty.
