He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 because the blind man approached him! 2 You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself, 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 to him thou attendest 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 And as for him who cometh unto thee running, 8 And he feareth 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 From Nutfah (male and female semen drops) He created him, and then set him in due proportion; 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 In order to benefit you and your cattle. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 with darkness overspread: 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
