He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 you attended to him, 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 and fears (Allah), 9 you pay him no heed. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 fruits, and grass. 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
