He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 upon highly honored pages, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 olives, dates, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
