He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 you attended to him, 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 and in awe [of God] 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 Noble and pious. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Out of what did Allah create him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 fruits, and grass. 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Every man of them shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
