He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ (The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away, 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 Yet you pay attention 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 and fearfully, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 upon highly honored pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 on that Day, to every one of them will his own state be of sufficient concern. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 These will be the unbelievers, the wicked. 42
