He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 because the blind man approached him! 2 How canst thou know, whether haply he might be cleansed, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 To him you give attention. 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 and in awe of God 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 These verses are a reminder 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 Indeed, he has not fulfilled that which He has ordered him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 And when the Blast shall sound, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 his consort, his sons, 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
