He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)? 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 And he feareth 9 you pay him no heed. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble, pious. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 then caused the grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruits and herbage 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 And his mother and his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Dust shall cover them 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
