He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because a blind man came to him. 2 But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and in awe of God 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 Then We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and green fodder 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 And thick gardens, 30 and fruits and fodder 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
