He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 As for he who is sufficed 5 To him you attend; 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 and in awe [of God] 9 You neglect. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 (This Quran) is also recorded in honorable books, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and pious. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Indeed, he has not fulfilled that which He has ordered him. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 Then We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 olives, dates, 29 And thick gardens, 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
