Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 And ten nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 Enter among My servants 29 enter My Paradise! 30
