Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And by ten nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
