Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And by ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 into My Paradise. 30
