Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Considering all this - could there be, to anyone endowed with reason, a [more] solemn evidence of the truth? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Join My servants. 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
