Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 into My Paradise. 30
