Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 so your Lord unleashed on them the scourge of punishment: 13 Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And ye love wealth with inordinate love! 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
