Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and ten nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
