Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 The night as it advances, 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Did you not see how did your Lord deal with (the tribe of) Aad? 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
