Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the break of Day 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 led rebellious lives, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
