Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
