Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 and the ten nights! 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 into My Paradise. 30
