Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 The night as it advances, 4 Considering all this - could there be, to anyone endowed with reason, a [more] solemn evidence of the truth? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
