Dawn (Al-Fajr)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and the ten nights! 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
