Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights! 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 Enter then My garden." 30
