Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 by the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 Join My servants. 29 into My Paradise. 30
