Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the dawn 1 and ten nights, 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 led rebellious lives, 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 none shall bind as He binds. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
