Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the Dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 Consider the multiple and the One! 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 When the earth is crushed into small pieces 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Join My servants. 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
