Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the break of Day 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 led rebellious lives, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 Join My servants. 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
