Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn; 1 By the Nights twice five; 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad - 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 led rebellious lives, 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 So enter among My servants, 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
