Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the Dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 led rebellious lives, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 Join My worshipers and 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
