Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the Dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 Enter then My garden." 30
