Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 And the ten nights, 2 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah). 3 Consider the night as it runs its course! 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 none shall bind as He binds. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
