Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 and the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 And enter into My garden. 30
