Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Dawn, 1 and the ten nights! 2 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah). 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
