Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
