Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
