The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
