The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 in which you are now living 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 Of a related orphan, 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
